Ghaziabad, India—School Children Planting For Change!
Global Update From Rama, In Ghaziabad, India
A local horticulture society and it’s leader Rama Tyagi reached out to share they are joining the global #plantforchange movement by making wonderful school nutrition gardens in many schools in the town of Ghaziabad, India, this season. They have and will continue to plant a few saplings and do activities like making seed balls with the children to plant outside of school and work on vegetables, herbs and pollinator gardens.
“We are working totally with organic seeds and processes. We have planted seeds in the soil using cow dung and vermicompost. We shall only be using bio enzymes if needed; we have taught the children how to make them on their own,” Rama shares.
Other areas of focus in Rama’s teachings for the children are composting, incorporating companion planting and making sure to plant herbs and medicinal plants. Besides the central vegetable gardens, there will be space for butterfly & pollinator gardens and love for the birds.
“We will also be laying emphasis on recycling materials by using bottles or other waste products to make pots as well.”
Restoration In Progress—
In the last months, Rama shares that she has visited many local schools to check out the feasibility of expanding her efforts and making more kitchen gardens. One observational obstacle she notes is that in most of the schools, all their outside areas have been covered with tiles, leaving no open ground available to plant, so this will have to be addressed and worked around moving forward.
“I have decided to work on the schools first where land is available, and for a 2nd phase, we will do container gardening in locations with only tile, where we will have to provide them with pots and grow bags, but still a wonderful option.” shares Rama.
