Radish Seed Harvesting
WHEN TO HARVEST RADISH SEEDS
Radish seeds will only form on bolted radish plants, ones that are NOT being harvested for their roots but left to flower and then seed. The flowers will form on the plant after the root is no longer viable and seed pods will form shortly after flowering.
Allowing a section of radish plants to flower supply’s us growers with enough seeds for storage, sharing and replanting.
As the radish plant puts out pods they will start off green and as the seeds mature will turn to light brown when dried and ready to harvest as seen here.
TO HARVEST:
Once you notice seed pods forming, let them turn brown and be fully dried on the plant. Whole plant will die back & be brittle when ready yo harvest seed.
Cut off seed pods from plant & collect in bowl or bag.
If dried seed pods have been rained on make sure to further layout and dry in open air, to fully dry once again for seed collection. Few weeks drying indoors.
To harvest & collect seeds use hands or small paring knife to carefully split open seed pods to collect 4-6 seeds inside each. Make small narrow cut just to open pod, making sure not to cut seeds.
Store saved seed in envelope or glass jar with lid in dark even temperate to cool conditions for short term storage.
For long term storage store seeds in envelope or jar in freezer.
SEED STAORAGE—seed envelopes, mason jars, any small glass jar with lid, store in dark, cool area like back of cupboard or in freezer for longer term seed storage.
SEED USES —replanting, medicinal.
FUN FACT — Radish seed pods can be harvested for eating. Many people harvest while seed pods are green and pickle them. Have you tried this edible?
